A Texas state bill proposed by Republican state Rep. Tom Oliverson could charge transgender people with 'gender identity fraud' for identifying their sex assigned at birth incorrectly on official documents.
The bill would make it a state jail felony, punishable by up to two years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000, for making false statements about one's sex assigned at birth to a governmental entity or employer.
Another bill filed by Texas state Rep. Brent Money aims to prohibit health care providers from offering puberty-suppressing medication, hormone therapy, or surgeries for gender identity affirmation to any patient, including adults.
Major medical associations in the U.S., such as the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, support transition-related care and oppose restrictions on it.
Texas has introduced nearly 170 state bills targeting LGBTQ people this year, including measures restricting transition-related care and barring trans student athletes from playing on sports teams that align with their gender identities.
