Several speed cameras across Staten Island have been obstructed with fake flowers, which are affixed using duct tape and zip ties.
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has removed as many as 14 of these obstructions and labeled them as 'unacceptable'.
The obstructions have been attributed to a group calling themselves the 'Staten Island Beautification Squad', as noted in messages left at the site.
Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella expressed understanding of public frustration, noting that speed cameras were initially intended for school zones but have expanded in use.
The DOT emphasized that tampering with speed cameras is dangerous and illegal, and they are working with the NYPD to address the issue.
