The Colorado Secretary of State's office stated that the exposure of these passwords does not pose an immediate security threat to the state's elections.

The Colorado Republican Party made the situation public, stating that the information had been online since August and was removed on October 24.

The Secretary of State's office informed the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency about the incident and is working to address the situation.

The exposure of voting machine passwords follows the prosecution of former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, who was involved in a separate incident of unauthorized access to voting equipment.
