Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing to discuss various issues, including foreign interference and human rights.
Joly emphasized that Canada will not tolerate any form of interference in its democracy, including election interference and intimidation of diaspora communities.
The meeting did not result in significant progress in improving strained bilateral relations, partly due to negative perceptions of China among Canadians.
Joly raised concerns about China's human rights record, including its treatment of Uyghurs, Tibetans, and its actions in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The two ministers discussed trade issues, including potential tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles and measures to stop the shipment of chemicals used in fentanyl production.
