The U.S. Defense Department identified $2 billion worth of accounting errors in its estimations of military aid sent to Ukraine, according to a GAO report on July 25.
The Pentagon had previously announced on June 21, 2023, that it overestimated the value of arms sent to Ukraine by $6.2 billion over the past two years.
The total unspent sum due to these errors now amounts to $8.2 billion.
The GAO report indicated that the Pentagon struggles to accurately estimate the cost of defense articles shipped to Ukraine due to unclear definitions in the Foreign Assistance Act and lack of specific valuation guidance.
Due to the accounting errors, the Defense Department can send an additional $2 billion in weapons to Ukraine to cover the amount already approved by U.S. President Joe Biden.
