An AI-controlled autonomous robot performed a dental procedure on a human patient for the first time.
The robot, developed by Perceptive, uses a 3D volumetric scanner with optical coherence tomography (OCT) to create detailed models of the mouth.
The procedure, which typically takes two hours and two visits, was completed by the robot in about 15 minutes.
The system eliminates the need for X-rays by using light beams for imaging, achieving around 90% accuracy in cavity detection.
The robot is not yet FDA-approved, and Perceptive has not provided a timeline for its public rollout.
