A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Japan's Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu island at 4:42 p.m. local time.
Japan issued a tsunami advisory and a 'mega earthquake caution' following the quake, urging residents to stay away from the coastline and practice increased vigilance.
Three people were reported injured, and there were 10 reports of damage, including landslides and broken windows at Miyazaki airport.
Tsunami waves of up to 1.6 feet were detected along parts of Kyushu’s southern coast and the nearby island of Shikoku.
All 12 nuclear reactors on Kyushu and Shikoku remain safe, with no blackouts or damage to water or communications systems reported.
