Colombian President Gustavo Petro signed a bill banning bullfighting in Colombia on Monday, July 22, 2024.

The bill was signed in front of animal rights activists during a ceremony in Bogota's bullring.

The ban was approved by Colombia's Congress in May 2024 and calls for a complete ban on bullfights by 2027.

The bill also mandates the conversion of more than a dozen bullrings into cultural and sporting venues.

Bullfighting aficionados argue that the ban violates cultural heritage rights and jeopardizes the livelihoods of those involved in the bullfighting industry.
